Ripped from the author’s heart by a constant stream of real-life headlines, award-winning fantasy author Robert Jackson Bennett’s forthcoming novella is a dark science fiction action parable about an America that has permanently surrendered to paranoia, distrust, and gun violence. Tor.com Publishing is proud to announce the acquisition of Vigilance.
The United States. 2030. John McDean executive produces “Vigilance,” a reality game show designed to make sure American citizens stay alert to foreign and domestic threats. Shooters are introduced into a “game environment,” and the survivors get a cash prize.
The TV audience is not the only one that’s watching though, and McDean soon finds out what it’s like to be on the other side of the camera.
Said acquiring editor Justin Landon:
Robert pitched me this book right after the Parkland shooting in February 2018. As Central Texas residents, both Robert and I had just observed the Sutherland Springs shooting a few months before. In the shadow of these two events, he began to earnestly describe our children’s America as he saw it. Those discussions became Vigilance. Although the term vigilance in the book is used to represent the worst of America’s gun culture, it is my sincere hope it makes us all vigilant in making sure this future never comes to pass.
